For our first reunion, we made plans for Bill
to pick me up at the
airport in Indy ..my plane was supposed to land at 6AMbut was delayed for almost an hour. I was on needles and pins
while waiting to deplane, and of course everyone moved at a
snail's pace... I wanted to yell at them, don't you know what is
waiting for me just through those gates ..GET OUT OF MY WAY!!! I was also concerned that he wouldn't recognize me,
or in fact run screaming out of the airport ..keep in mind we
had not seen each other in 36 years, just some old photo's
that were hand picked because they really didn't tell the
whole story about how we "felt" we had changed over the
years.
Our fears never materialized, I was one of the last people to deplane, and as our eyes met we knew each other immediately. He was standing off to the side (perhaps to get a head start on the run!!) and behind a few people, but I saw no one but him. I'm sure my smile was as big as the wonderful smile looking back at me, and I rushed to stand in front of him. Still unsure of how he felt (although we had professed our love to each other on the phone and in e-mails) this was the real thing... not sure of what to do next, he finally embraced for what seemed like forever, but still not long enough, and he kissed me on the forehead, just as he said he would. We went to get coffee and talked before going to retrieve my luggage. As we walked out to his car, he finally gave me a wonderful on the mouth, glad to see you, glad your here.. I love you kiss. Thats what I had been waiting for, a confirmation that he still liked what he saw, and that this was a new beginning. We put my luggage in the trunk, he opened the door for me, gave me another kiss and let himself into the car, he started the car and pushed the CD button on the radio and Blue Velvet began to play!! Oh and I forgot to mention, he was also wearing Canoe cologne. Bill says he doesn't have a romantic bone in his body, but I beg to differ, how many men would remember all of this, and then supply the memories all over again? We embraced again for what seemed like forever, and I wanted to stay there in his arms. We finally pulled out of the parking lot to another destination. We had planned on going to a small park near my sisters so that we could have some alone time without a crowd of people around, but public enough to hold our feelings in check! I had a gift for Bill, a key chain that I had engraved on the back "Our second chance at first love. Yours, Pat" this seemed like the perfect place to give this gift to him. We then went on to my sisters for another type of reunion. Bill had always been close to my sister, who he called Clyde. He had in fact visited with her the month before on his way back from Tennessee after visiting his sister Gretchen. That was the first time he had seen her in over 30 years and Clyde (Nancy) sort of arranged this reunion by inviting Bill to her house for the 4th, knowing I would be there myself. I spoiled the surprise when I invited Bill to visit me there over the 4th. He didn't commit to my invitation, although he had already started making plans to be there.. but I broke him down and he admitted he would be there no matter what! |
